I remember a significant moment in my campus ministry when a young woman approached me with a thought-provoking statement: ‘Sir, I’ve been observing you for the past five years, and I believe you’re the kind of pastor I need to guide me toward my destiny. Would you consider mentoring me?’ I was impressed that she knew exactly what kind of spiritual leader she needed.

Friend, do you know what kind of pastor you need? Until you distinguish between your wants and needs, you’re still immature (Hebrews 5:14). Your wants are often driven by comfort, while your needs are tied to your purpose and destiny. Your wants are based on your feelings. Your needs are based on your revelation (1 Corinthians 2:9-10).

Making decisions based on feelings can lead to destruction (2 Corinthians 5:7). Choosing a church and pastor is a critical decision for your destiny. It’s not about feelings; it’s about God’s will. It is not about comfort. It is about God’s requirement for your destiny. Submit your wants to your needs (Matthew 26:39).

You need a pastor who understands your destiny and can train you for it (Esther 4:14-16). Church is more than a gathering; it’s a place for spiritual growth. We grow to fulfil our destiny. We’re refined to fulfil God’s purpose. We are stretched to go above and beyond, reaching our maximum potential (1 Timothy 4:12-15).

Anyone who cannot correct you cannot pastor you (Titus 1:13). You need a pastor who will challenge you. A true pastor will correct and guide you. You need a pastor who’s fearless. He is unafraid of your status or achievements. He will speak truth, regardless of your position (2 Corinthians 13:8).

Sadly, many people choose their church and pastor wrongly (Proverbs 14:12). They seek a pastor who will only affirm them. They want flattery, not fathering. They want comfort, not challenge. They want pampering, not purpose. They only want God to give them. They don’t want Him to make them (Matthew 4:19). What about you?
