A while ago, I was in my closet, praying and spending time with God. Like he always does, my son started banging on the door, shouting, “Daddy, open the door!” He wouldn’t stop. His sister had to tell him, “Stop disturbing Daddy.” But his reply hit me: “I’m not disturbing Daddy. He’s my Daddy.”
Friend, you are not disturbing God. When someone is your Father, you don’t stand at a distance. You maximize the relationship (1 John 1:3). Many believers still see God as someone too busy, too far, too important to bother with their small issues. But that’s not who He is. God is never too busy for you (Isaiah 49:14-16).
Watching my son has taught me something. No matter how occupied I am, he will still push his way into my time (Mark 7:25-30). He doesn’t apologize for needing me. And I always end up making time for him because he’s my son. That’s how it should be with us and God (John 16:23-24).
It is one thing to have a relationship with God. It is another thing to actually enjoy fellowship with Him (Luke 10:38-42). As a pastor, I often hear people start with, “Pastor, I hope I’m not disturbing you.” Some even keep their distance so they won’t “bother” me. That’s fine with me — I’m only human. But please don’t take that same attitude to God (Luke 11:5-13).
You are not disturbing God. What troubles you, troubles Him. What burdens you, burdens Him (Hebrews 4:14-16). When you realize that God feels what you feel and that He’s eager to help you, you will start coming to Him daily and boldly. You will cast all your cares on Him because He genuinely cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
You are as close to God as you choose to be. God doesn’t play favourites. But any of us can become His favourite by drawing near and making the most of the access we’ve been given. Like John the Beloved, the chest of Jesus is still open for you to lean on. He wants you to drop your burdens on Him and to hear His heartbeat for you (John 13:23-26). You are not disturbing Daddy.
