Recently, I heard my younger daughter trying to correct her brother when she said something I consider funny but instructive. She told her brother, “Daniel, stop sagging your trousers.” Obviously, the one-year-old was not sagging his trousers. But I see an elder sister trying to mentor her younger brother. Really, who is mentoring you?

Friend, who is mentoring you? There is power in mentoring. Most of what influences you are more unconscious than conscious. There would be many unconscious teachers in life, but make sure you are not an unconscious learner (2 Timothy 1:5). Pay attention to what you are learning.

Mentoring is the secret to raising the next generation (Deuteronomy 29:29). When mentoring is not in place, a whole generation can be wasted (Judges 2:10). For the God of the fathers to become the God of the sons, the wisdom and devotion of the fathers must be consciously transferred to the sons (Psalms 78:1-8).

If you have any young person around you, you have a divine responsibility to point them to God and to greatness (1 Samuel 2:12). You would give account before God for whoever He strategically places around you. You must pay attention. You must be intentional.

Be careful what you are modelling before children. Their rate of absorption is beyond imagination. Handlers of young people must rise up to do the right thing. Listen, owning a school is more than business; it is ministry (Proverbs 22:6). Don’t just collect their money and destroy their destiny unconsciously.

My daughter saw the need to point her brother to the right thing. She knows what is right, and she knows how to help her younger brother. Who is mentoring you, and who are you mentoring? What will people remember you for? The foul language you speak without restraint? The ungodly music you listen to? Mentoring is a sacred responsibility that demands accountability (1 Samuel 3:11-13). Don’t waste it.
