I saw something that made me pause in a home recently. A mum told her 3-year-old daughter, “Go and call your Dad.” A few seconds later, I heard the little girl shout, “Babe, mummy is calling you.” “Babe?” I thought. That’s what Mum calls dad. But to that child, he’s not “babe.” He’s Dad.

Friend, you need to understand the law of difference. You must know who people are to you (1 Samuel 18:1-4). The same person will mean different things to different people. Your job is to discern and relate with them accordingly. That’s the law of difference (2 Kings 6:21, 13:14).

When you ignore differences, you mismanage relationships. When you mismanage relationships, you mismanage destiny (Proverbs 18:24). Destiny comes to us wrapped in time and in people. What you do with your time and how you treat your relationships will shape where you end up. Be discerning (2 Corinthians 5:16).

Don’t copy how others relate to people (2 Kings 2:1-5). That little girl called her dad “babe” because that’s what she heard. It was imitation, not understanding. That’s immaturity. Are you also relating with people based on how others relate with them (John 6:66-69)?

Jesus didn’t only ask, “What are the crowds saying about me?” He also asked His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:13-18). He wanted to know if they saw Him by revelation or by public opinion. Like Peter, you won’t truly know someone until you know what God calls them (Acts 9:13-15).

What does God call your spouse (1 Peter 3:7)? What does God call your pastor? To others, he may just be “pastor.” To you, he may be your destiny father and coach. Some friends are not just friends. Like David and Jonathan, they are destiny company. Don’t treat them casually. Relate based on revelation, not emotion (2 Corinthians 5:17).
