Topic: HOW TO BE LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

Texts: John 10:1-10, Romans 8:14

Aim: To help us understand and learn how to be led by the Holy Spirit

INTRODUCTION

There are three important subjects that everyone who wants to fulfil destiny must learn; how to be led by the Holy Spirit, how to live by faith, and how to walk in love. As a continuation of our study on “The Holy Spirit and You,” we would be looking at how to be led by the Holy Spirit with particular emphasis on how each one of us can position ourselves to be led.

  1. What does it mean to be led by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14)?
    • It means to enjoy communication with the Holy Spirit
    • It means to be guided into God’s will for your life
    • It means to understand what and how God feels per time about your life and endeavours
    • It is to be sensitive to the way and manner in which He chooses to relate with you
  2. Truths about the leading of the Holy Spirit
    • The Holy Spirit wants to lead you more than you want to be led (Isaiah 48:17)
    • If you are born again, the Holy Spirit has been leading you. You may not just be aware of it yet (1 Corinthians 2:9-10)
    • Just as Shepherd-Sheep relationship, the Holy only leads sheep; these are people who are not only born again but also have the heart of a sheep. They want to follow the shepherd (John 10:27)
    • God will not lead you if you have idols in your heart (Ezekiel 14:4)
    • God will not lead you if you are constantly in disobedience to His leading (Genesis 6:3)
    • God does not only lead you by speaking. He also leads you by signs and signals (Acts 16:6-10)
    • God usually establishes patterns with which He leads each one of us. It is good to know your peculiar patterns (1 Samuel 17:38-40)
  3. Why must you be led by the Holy Spirit?
    • You are limited in knowledge and experience (Ecclesiastes 10:15)
    • You are a stranger on the earth, so you definitely need a guide (Psalms 119:19)
    • God is the one who knows where the profits and blessings are (Isaiah 48:17, 21)
    • The leading of the Holy Spirit is important if you would live safely in this wicked and dangerous world (Psalms 17:4)
    • The leading of the Holy Spirit is the secret to expectional results (Deuteronomy 32:9-13)
    • The Holy Spirit has been given to you as your helper in life; enjoying and maximising His leading is the way to unlock His help (John 14:16, 26)
  4. How does the Holy Spirit lead us?
    • The primary way the Holy Spirit leads us is through inward witness (Romans 8:14)
    • He leads us through the word of God (Psalms 119:105)
    • Thought impression; He places thoughts in our heart that we cannot easily yank off (Proverbs 16:3, Acts 7:23)
    • Through restraint and constraint; He pulls us from doing something or pushes us to do something (Acts 16:7, 18:5)
    • Through divinely ordered steps and stops (Psalms 37:23)
    • Through peace or lack of peace; this must be after thorough prayer on a matter (Philippians 4:6-7)
    • Through the voice of wisdom (Ecclesiastes 10:10)
    • Through His God-ordained servants or ministers (Isaiah 30:20-21)
    • Through visions and dreams (Job 33:14-18). These visions and dreams must align with scriptures and the witness of the Holy Spirit in our hearts
    • Through prophecies (1 Timothy 1:18). This prophecy is usually from established sources and must align with God’s word
    • Through circumstances (1 Samuel 17:29). God’s leading through circumstances must not violate scriptures and previous leading
    • Through still small voice; this is the voice of the Holy Spirit in our human spirit, silent yet powerful (1 Kings 19:12)
    • Through audible voice; sometimes the Holy Spirit chooses to speak audibly and authoritatively to your ears. It is often commanding in nature (Acts 8:29)
  5. What are spectacular and supernatural leading?
    • Spectacular leading is a type of leading that often comes graphically, dramatically, and exceptionally. Leadings like visions, dreams, prophecies, and audible voices are spectacular
    • Supernatural leading is a type of leading that may not come dramatically but is often simple but powerful. Simply put; supernatural leading is the leading of the Holy Spirit via the word of God and the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14)
    • All spectacular leadings by the Holy Spirit are supernatural leadings, but not all supernatural leadings are spectacular
    • God does not normally lead people spectacularly. He only does so in His own prerogative and due to the peculiarity of what to be passed across (Acts 10:9-20)
    • We are not supposed to press into/for spectacular leadings, else the devil will take advantage of us (2 Corinthians 2:11). We should follow the supernatural and be satisfied with it
    • Spectacular leading is not superior to supernatural leading
  6. General Counsels on how to be safely led by the Holy Spirit
    • Believe that God wants to lead you, and He has been leading you B. Find out how God normally leads you on time and stick with it
    • Don’t follow a divine leading without two or three witnesses or confirmations (Psalms 62:11, 2 Corinthians 13:1)
    • Be located in a church family and sit under a pastoral ministry so that your sensitivity can be shaperned and you can get God’s leading easily (Isaiah 30:20-21, Jeremiah 3:15)
    • Learn to be a man of the word before being a man of the Spirit. Find out God’s leading via His word. The more you know the Bible, the easier it is to be led (Psalms 119:89, Isaiah 8:20)
    • Time is a clarifier. Don’t be hasty in following a divine leading. Allow the test of time (Isaiah 28:16)
    • Always remember that you can miss it. But always trust God to get better (1 Samuel 16:6-7)
    • The will of God for you is revealed in phases. The more you grow and go, the more you would know (Isaiah 28:10)

CONCLUSION

The leading of the Holy Spirit is your greatest advantage as a believer. Therefore, learning how the Holy Spirit leads you is the greatest skill you can ever develop. Whereas Jesus brought us to sonship, the Holy Spirit is the one who brings us to the manifestation of sonship (John 1:12, Romans 8:14)
