In my childhood days, I was a victim of mood swings. I would suddenly become moody and go sit down in a corner, looking unhappy and visibly angry. It used to get my mum bothered. She would ask me if all was well. She’d do everything possible to help me. She hated to see me unhappy. But I wouldn’t listen. I often derive some weird, pseudo fulfilment from it. But God delivered me.
Friend, mood swing is not a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Most times, people give excuses for their mood swings and even try to justify it. The truth is, mood swings would rob you of many benefits and blessings in life. It robs you of the presence and power of God (1 Samuel 16:13-23, Psalms 22:3). God does not and cannot dwell in an atmosphere of sorrow; such an atmosphere only attracts the devil.
Mood swing will rob you of quality relationships. Nobody wants to hang around moody people (Proverbs 18:24). Nobody wants to do business or have any dealings with unstable or unpredictable people. You cannot attract the right marital partner with mood swings. Unfortunately, some people don’t even know that their attitude and disposition often send the wrong signals to people around them (SoS 2:15).
Mood swing will affect your health (Proverbs 17:22). Your health actually flows from your spirit and mind to your body. You cannot prosper in health more than you are prospering in your soul (3 John 1:2). Have you noticed that the days you were emotionally unbalanced were the days you did not also feel right bodily? Mood swing will affect your health.
You cannot be an effective leader with mood swings. People love to follow leaders who are
dependable and reliable (Hebrews 13:8). Notice that until Peter submitted his will and emotions to the Holy Spirit, his leadership was ineffective (John 21:3, Acts 2:14, 21). Make yourself a candidate for leadership by being in charge of your emotions.
Mood swing is not a temperament issue. It is a maturity issue (1 Corinthians 13:11, 1 Peter 2:2). Never give the excuse of your introverted nature for your mood swing. Mood swing reflects where you are in your walk with the Lord and how much allowance you have given the Holy Spirit in your life. The job of the Holy Spirit is not only to help you speak in tongues. It is also to help you take charge of your emotions (Galatians 5:24-25). Mood swing is not a fruit of the Spirit. Never forget this.
