I was taking my children to school that day when I saw two grown men, apparently just waking up, eating very early that morning (it was past 7) right in the open! It looked so odd to me that I asked my wife; “Do people still eat this very early in the day?”
While I did not know the circumstances behind their eating that early, and while it may be medically encouraged to not eat late, I’m not talking primarily about physical food here but about matters of destiny.
Friend, whoever would fulfil destiny must learn to manage his or her appetite (Ecclesiastes 10:16). Your appetite defines your life since it is what drives what you take per time. Most evils happen during the time of eating and drinking. Jesus warned that, at His return, men would be eating and drinking…(Matthew 24:38). It would be those moments when people lose sensitivity.
Adam’s fall was in the area of food (Genesis 3:6). Jesus’ temptation was also tied to food (Luke 4:3-4). It was in the time of eating and celebrations that Herod was “compelled” to cut off the head of John the Baptist (Matthew 14:6-11). Esau lost his birthright because of food (Genesis 25:29-34). Daniel distinguished himself in excellence when he gained victory over food (Daniel 1:8-20).
Humans are creations of appetite but you must guide your appetite correctly. You are either hungry for God or for something else (Luke 4:4, John 4:31-34). Knowing when to “eat” reveals your maturity level (Ecclesiastes 10:16). Knowing WHY you eat is what reveals nobility; common people eat for pleasure, champions eat for strength and health (1 Kings 19:6-8, Ecclesiastes 10:17).
This season, manage your appetite well! Don’t eat your future today. Don’t be carried away with what’s happening around that you lose your guard. Don’t relegate fasting to the background. Develop a fresh hunger and passion for God, not for what does not profit (Hebrews 13:9). You are what you eat. Eat right and manifest well. You will succeed!
