One church member came up to share testimony in a particular church. He told the congregation about how he got a job he didn’t apply for. After he was done with his testimony, the pastor, knowing what exactly happened, went up and told him to clarify his testimony to let people know that he knew someone who recommended him. The testimony was then put in proper perspective.

Friend, there are stories behind testimonies (Psalms 78:1-7). As much as testimonies boost our faith and to establish our victory, we must be careful and balanced in the way we share or listen to them (Revelation 12:11). Most times, there are things behind and beyond what the testifier reveals.

While it is good to claim or tap into people’s testimonies, you need to ask what the people sharing them did that made the testimonies a reality (Acts 8:13-20). Because of limited time and an attempt to sound unusual, some people do not tell what exactly transpired in their testimonies. This is why such testimonies do not get repeated in other people’s lives.

Behind every glory is a story. Behind every testimony is a test. Behind every triumph is a trial. Behind every suddenly of God is the patience of man (Hebrews 6:12). Don’t only tap into people’s testimonies without hearing or learning what they went through. We don’t only follow people’s faith. We also follow their patience.

Most times, the way God’s power and blessings will find expression in each of us will be different. Rather than focusing on other people’s destinations, focus on your own journey (2 Corinthians 10:12). It is the journey that produces the destination. If you don’t walk your own road with God, you won’t have the testimony you desire. It is those who are willing and obedient who would eat the good of the land (Isaiah 1:19).

Church members need to stop thinking that God will bless them the exact way He blesses their pastor (Proverbs 22:29). This is one area where people get it wrong when hearing testimonies from pastors. You may not have someone give you a car or house as your pastor. But the same God will prosper your business, give you a career boost, and help you to commit to your craft via which you would buy or own a car and house. It is the same God but different method or means.
