As a child, I battled mood swings. I’d suddenly go quiet, sit in a corner, and wear a long face. It worried my mum. She’d ask what was wrong and try to help me. But I resisted. I even found a strange comfort in it. Thank God for deliverance. That experience taught me that moodiness is not normal for a child of God.
Friend, learn to master your mood. Mood swings are not a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Yet we excuse them and call it “my personality.” The truth is, moodiness robs you. It steals your peace, and it blocks the presence of God (1 Samuel 16:13-23, Psalm 22:3). God dwells in praise, not in gloom. An atmosphere of sorrow invites the wrong guest. Don’t open that door.
Mood swings also damage relationships (Proverbs 18:24). No one wants to be close to someone unpredictable. No one wants to do business with, or marry, an emotional rollercoaster. Often, it’s not big issues that push people away. It’s attitude, tone, and constant moodiness, that send the wrong signal (SoS 2:15).
Master your mood. Your health is connected to it. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” What happens in your spirit and mind will reflect in your body (3 John 1:2). Notice how the days you felt emotionally low were also the days you felt weak physically. God wants you well in spirit, soul, and body. Guard your heart because your health flows from it.
You cannot lead well with mood swings. Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. People follow leaders who are stable. Peter saw this. Until he submitted to the Holy Spirit, his leadership was inconsistent (John 21:3, Acts 2:14). Dependability builds trust. Moodiness destroys it.
Finally, mood swings are a maturity issue, not a temperament issue (1 Corinthians 13:11, 1 Peter 2:2). Don’t blame being introverted. The Holy Spirit was given to help you, not just to pray in tongues, but to govern your emotions (Galatians 5:24-25). Mood swings are not a fruit of the Spirit. Master your mood. Don’t let it control you.
