A young man sought the wisdom of a respected minister, asking, “What’s the most powerful gift God can give beyond salvation and the Holy Spirit?” After a thoughtful pause, the old man replied, “The gift of silence.” He then fell silent, allowing the words to sink in. Minutes later, he offered further explanation, helping the young man understand the profound value of silence.

Friend, one of the best gifts that God can give you is the gift of silence (Psalm 46:10). If you can control your mouth, you will control your destiny. For some people, the devil is not their problem. Their mouth is. A lot of people have aborted divine pregnancies with their mouth (1 Peter 3:10).

Zechariah would have aborted John’s miraculous birth but for the gift of silence (Luke 1:18-20). The angel Gabriel had to stop him before he stopped God’s program on the earth. Where have you used your mouth to stop God’s program for your life? One way to keep the devil clueless and confused about your life and your next move is to be discrete with what you say (2 Corinthians 2:11).

The devil is not omniscient. It is careless human beings that empower him with information and knowledge for his enterprise (Genesis 3:1-5). This is why before God would trust you with serious things in destiny, He would sanctify your mouth (Psalm 24:3-6). He would help you manage what, how, where, and when you speak.

You cannot go far in life if you talk anyhow (Proverbs 6:2). Some people have made it difficult for God to help them by what they say. God wants to make you a better listener before making you a better speaker. The words ‘silent’ and ‘listen’ are composed of the same alphabets. If you are not silent, you cannot listen. We are to be quick to hear and slow to speak (James 1:19).

One of the proofs that a man has met God is the way he uses his mouth (Isaiah 6:1-8, 50:4). For Isaiah, his tongue was touched before he could touch his world. Jesus was given the tongue of the learned. Peter moved from a careless talker to a sober elder. Your mouth is not only closer to your heart. It is also closer to your future. Your destiny is at the mercy of your mouth (Proverbs 18:21).
