“Sir, how have you been able to maintain balance between ministry, family, and other areas of life?” This was the question I was asked in a conference recently. I’ve been constantly asked this question over the years. In my walk with God, I learned to maintain balance early enough, and it has helped me greatly.

Friend, don’t be an extremist. In all you think, say, and do, always operate within the right balance (Titus 2:1-7). Balance is key to a life of safety and success. Don’t be caught in any form of extreme. Like the saying goes; too much of everything (except God) is dangerous. Know your limit of safety per time (1 Timothy 4:16).

Our God is a God of balance. Everything He did and still does is always done in balance (Romans 1:20). The whole creation carries the signature of divine balance; the ecosystem, solar system, human system, etc. are also expressions of God’s wisdom in ensuring balance. It is this balance that makes things work and last (Psalm 19:1-3).

In doctrine, be balanced. Don’t push a biblical truth beyond the provisions of scriptures (Titus 2:7). If you push a doctrine to an extreme, it ends up becoming an error. It would also end up coming across as dangerous. Most of the theological arguments in our days are not much about truth or error but that of extremes (Titus 3:9-11).

In everyday life, maintain balance. Maintain the right balance between your spiritual life and practical life (Romans 12:11). Don’t be a spiritual person who lacks practicality. Don’t constitute a nuisance and burden to those around you. Balance faith with wisdom. Balance prayer with diligence (James 2:17-18). Balance family and work.

As a pastor, raise a balanced church. Don’t only prepare your members to make heaven. Prepare them to be relevant on the earth (Matthew 5:13-16). As a church member, avoid churches or ministries that are into extremes. Live your whole life with the right perspectives and proportions (Hebrews 13:7). You either live a life of balance or you become a burden to yourself and your generation.
