Years ago, a young man came to meet me about who to marry. He had prayed about it and was convinced God was leading him. I had some caution, but I had to let him proceed. He returned with a fallen countenance. The lady was already in a relationship, about to get married. When I asked him what next, he said he’d look elsewhere. What changed?

Friend, there are no experts in divine leading. Always remember that when you think you cannot be wrong, you are already wrong. With God, wanting to be right is more important than being right. We are all learners when it comes to divine leading.

The posture of a man who wants to be right is one of humility (James 4:6). Like Samuel, it is possible to be very wrong in something you think you are very right about (1 Samuel 16:6-7, Proverbs 14:12). You cannot be an expert in divine leading.

The fact that you got it right 99% of the time does not mean you don’t need to exercise caution in the next step. Perhaps David was a man after God’s heart because of his constant dependence on God (1 Samuel 30:8, Acts 13:22). No wonder he won most battles.

Like Solomon, when you see yourself as a child before God, you enjoy divine guidance (1 Kings 3:7-13). When a husband does, he won’t lead his family into trouble. When a pastor does, he enjoys ease of direction in ministry. Humility is seen in absolute dependency on God.

A man who assumes he knows what to do every time is truly proud. God does not lead the proud. This is why a future of regrets awaits them (Psalms 25:9, Proverbs 14:12). If the hand looks like Esau’s but the voice is Jacob’s, your sensitivity is under attack (Genesis 27:22).
