I stumbled on a post on social media the other day. Perhaps the writer tried to encourage people to make the best of their lives. But in doing so, he took a swipe at the marriage institution; “Why are people always talking about marriage as if it is an achievement? You don’t have to marry to become successful.”
Friend, marriage is an achievement (Proverbs 5:18). No matter how we tend to twist the narrative, we need to appreciate and celebrate a great marriage when we see one (Isaiah 51:1-2). We should also desire it no matter where we currently are in the journey of marriage; singles, about to wed, newly weds, young couples, older couples, etc.
I think where the problem lies is the way people go about marriage (Ecclesiastes 10:15). What most singles anticipate is not actually marriage, but wedding. The discussion is mostly on how beautiful that day would be; the vibes, clothes, bridal train, social media posts, etc. While these may not be bad in themselves. They should not be the focus (Proverbs 14:1).
Be careful of people who talk down on the marriage institution (Malachi 2:13-16). Some use the pulpit to subtly downplay it. Others via conversations and online posts. Some have even taken it upon themselves to launch campaigns against the marriage institution. They do so subtly, but it’s dangerous nonetheless.
You cannot be wiser than God who instituted marriage (Genesis 2:18). It was never man’s idea in the first place. Marriage is for purpose and destiny. It is to help man become what God ordained him to become. When you get it right in marriage, it already positions you at an advantage in the pursuit and fulfilment of God’s purpose (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).
Value your marriage. Honour your spouse. Appreciate the blessing of a family (Psalm 112:1-3, 128:1-6). Sometimes, people don’t value what they have until they lose it. Some of the people who speak or act against marriage often wish they had one. Singles, discover purpose. Build capacity. Succeed in your chosen field (Proverbs 24:27). But never downplay the relevance of a great marriage.
