A young man sought guidance on his marriage, praying in tongues for clarity on his future partner. The Lord instructed him to listen to his own prayer. As he continued, he noticed his tongues consistently ended with a specific name. The Holy Spirit revealed, “That’s your wife’s name.” He received direction through his own prayer language.
Friend, the place of prayer is the place of direction (Isaiah 30:20-21). Like someone once said; “What you say to God is prayer. What He says back to you is wisdom or direction.” Actually, the cycle of prayer is not complete unless God speaks to us. Prayer is a dialogue and not a monologue (Habakkuk 2:1-4). But many people have made it a monologue.
Most people pray without expecting God to speak to them (Acts 12:1-11). They pray to fulfil all righteousness. This is why they are still confused even after they have prayed. They pray without listening. If you do more of listening in prayer, you would get direction for your life and destiny (James 1:19). Don’t be too outspoken for God.
One practice that would greatly help your prayer life is intentional listening (Psalm 85:8). Decide to maintain this pattern of praying and listening. It would greatly help you. As you talk to God in prayer, He also wants to talk back to you. Maintain silence and stillness as you pray (Psalm 46:10).
Like the young man in our opening story, a lot of people have not unlocked the blessedness of praying in tongues (Romans 8:26-28). When you pray in tongues, you pray out direction for your life and destiny (1 Corinthians 14:2). You pray out answers. If you pay attention, the Holy Spirit begins to help you interpret your own tongues.
A dimension of prophecy is interpreting your own tongues (1 Corinthians 14:13-15). You don’t even need to have the gift of interpretation. You only need to listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to your heart while praying in tongues (Philippians 4:6-7). Listen to how and what you pray in understanding after you have just prayed in tongues. Most times, that’s the interpretation.
