We were in fellowship workers meeting one day on campus when one of our workers raised his hand to make a contribution. He said; “Pastor, I sense we need to change the light bulbs. They are burned out.” We could not contain our laughter. I simply told him; “Bro, you don’t need to sense that. Just say they need to be changed.” I realise he wanted to sound deep and spiritual.

Friend, you don’t always have to sound deep and spiritual to manifest the spirit life. True spirituality is in simplicity and practicality (James 3:13). In a bid to appear spiritual, some people have taken things to the extreme. We are to be supernatural, not super spiritual. We should live the supernatural life naturally and vice versa (John 1:14).

The supernatural life must be lived practically, or else we become a nuisance to people around us (Matthew 23:14). There are things the Holy Spirit will not tell you that wisdom or common sense will teach you (Proverbs 4:7). There is no point telling people that you are led to eat when it is just your normal schedule or choice of feeding.

Be careful that you are not smuggling the Holy Spirit into everything just to appear spiritual before people. Genuinely spiritual people don’t usually sound spiritual, but their steps and results give credence to the life they lead (Luke 7:35). Don’t only have a form of godliness while denying the power thereof. Christianity is not form but substance (2 Timothy 3:5).

You must learn to communicate or manifest your spiritual encounters in the most practical ways (Luke 4:1-21). This is a mark of maturity. For example, as a brother, you don’t have to tell us how you were in the Spirit on the Lord’s day or went to the third heaven in order to communicate your interest in a lady. Be plain and practical. Save those high sounding words and experiences for yourself.

Jesus’s life on earth was deeply spiritual and highly practical. He received the choice of his disciples in prayers, but he chose them without much noise or drama (Luke 6:12-16). What about you? How do you handle your spiritual experiences in real, practical life? A truly spiritual man is one who is able to balance spirituality with practicality. Never forget this.
