A brother in our church had a habit of dodging simple tasks and passing them on to others, especially younger members. But whenever it was time to be in the spotlight, he was always eager to grab the mic. I wasn’t surprised when he eventually left the church – his attitude wasn’t sustainable.

Friend, leadership is responsibility, and the burden of the faithful is more responsibility (1 Samuel 16:1-13).( Especially in an age and time where people jostle for positions and titles, we must remind ourselves that true leadership is taking responsibility for others. It is going out of your way to ensure the well-being of the collective. *It is to be your brother’s keeper (Genesis 4:9).

People don’t become responsible after they take up leadership. They become leaders when they become responsible (2 Timothy 2:2). In choosing leaders for a group, look for the person who’s already taking responsibility, doing the duties of that office without having a title or position (Philippians 2:20).

Position or title does not confer responsibility. It reveals responsibility (Judges 9:8-15). It shows who’s responsible and helps become more responsible. Think of platforms of leadership as an opportunity to do more. If you aren’t already doing anything, platforms are useless (Acts 6:1-7).

One of the ways to prepare yourself for leadership is to start taking responsibility where you are now (Luke 16:10-12). Stop waiting for a position or a call to lead. Lead from where you are. David came into the limelight by taking responsibility at the back side of the desert (1 Samuel 17:34-37). What about you?

Are you taking responsibility where you are at the moment (1 Corinthians 4:1-2)? Are you giving your best when no one is watching? Do you feel you need a title to lead or serve? How are you stewarding your gifts and abilities (2 Timothy 1:6)? How are you maximsimg your opportunities in life? Leadership is responsibility.
