Recently, I stumbled on a cane hidden behind our home chair. I was taken aback to how my children would sometimes take forever to look for cane when I’m to correct one of them. I concluded that they must have hidden the cane to avoid being beaten. They had forgotten that the rod and the staff are for comfort, not destruction.

Friend, if you must grow healthily in the things of God and in destiny, you must understand the place of the rod and the staff. This, perhaps, was what stood David out in his generation. He embraced both the rod of God and the staff of God. He saw them as comfort, not destruction (2 Samuel 24:14, Psalms 23:4).

Your attitude towards correction is a reflection of your understanding and maturity. Your sonship is also measured by your yieldedness to corrections and rebukes. It is bastards that refuse corrections (Proverbs 13:24, Hebrews 12:5-10). True sons submit to correction and are shaped by it (Psalms 141:5).

Your life cannot be more correct than the corrections you allow in your life. In God, it is not first about being right. It is about wanting to be right. It is that wanting to be right that makes you to submit to correction (Psalms 51:1-13, 139:23-24). Correction helps you to conform to Christ and His purpose for your life (2 Timothy 3:16).

Most times, God will use man to administer His corrections in your life. You must see beyond the man to the God that is working through the man. What some of us see as a man wrestling with us is actually God wanting to change us for His glory (Genesis 32:24-30). Fighting man can be tantamount to fighting God. Who is the person that God is using to correct you?

Whereas, the staff speaks to God using His power and authority to bring victory and progress to our lives, the rod speaks to God using His word and authority figures to bring us the shapening and molding that we need for our destiny (Jeremiah 18:1-6). You must see both of them as comfort. To embrace one and reject the other is to make a shipwreck of destiny.
