Recently, I tasted some honey in the absence of my younger daughter. When she came close and smelled my mouth, she asked; “Daddy, what’s this?” I responded; “It’s honey, do you know honey?” Her response got me thinking; “Yes, I know honey, that Samson ate when he was with the dead lion”. I was encouraged that scriptures had become her everyday culture.
Friend, you must have a culture of scriptures if you would live the reality of the Kingdom life. Bible study is not meant to be a religious routine, it must affect our everyday life and living. It must be our vocabulary. It must be our response to life. We must think scriptures, talk scriptures, practise scriptures and live scriptures.
“And that from a child you have known the holy scriptures…” (2 Timothy 3:15). Perhaps, one of the greatest legacies we can give our children is the legacy of scriptures. I wonder why we go the extra mile employing private lesson teachers for our children and we do not consider it necessary to employ private Bible study teachers for them. We pay expensive fees for their academic learning and only pay lip service to their spiritual education.
My daughter learnt about Samson from home and Church, do you teach your children at home? Do you pay attention to what they learn in Church? What’s your criteria for choosing the right Church for your family? Is it only about where your children can play and have fun or is it also about where they can learn and have life?
“Until I come, pay attention to reading, to exhortation, and to teaching” (1 Timothy 4:13). You must not leave your spiritual education to chances. You need to be intentional about it. You don’t learn scriptures by osmosis, you learn by the right engagement. You structure your schedules to include it. You need to also pay prices and go for accurate Bible knowledge (Luke 10:38-42).
It is the level of God’s word in you that would determine your response and perspective to life (Colossians 3:16). You must view and interact with life with the lens of scriptures. This is why God instructed the Israelites to bind the law on their neck and carry it about wheresoever they go (Deuteronomy 6:6-9). The scriptures must colour your outlook on life if you would make meaningful progress (Psalms 119:96-98).
