My spiritual father has a unique approach when meeting a fiancĂ© in counselling. While mummy handles the details, he focuses on assessing the young man’s financial readiness by asking to see his passbook. This reveals their financial habits and preparedness for marriage. By doing so, he’s teaching them the importance of mastering money in marriage.
Friend, marriage is not all about money. But money makes marriage and family easier (Ecclesiastes 10:19). Most marital problems are related directly or indirectly to finances. You need to pay attention to this truth. You must have a grip on financial matters if you hope to enjoy your marriage (Psalm 112:3).
Marriage is meant to be enjoyed, not just endured. For some families, just having some cash will help the atmosphere of the home (Proverbs 31:21-23). It will also greatly improve the relationship between spouses. You need to realise that your wife will look better and do better with money. Money should not be the focus. But it should not be ignored (Job 22:21-25).
One of the reasons you should trust God for finances in your family is because of your children (Psalm 128:1-6). Children learn by what they see, not just what they hear. As you preach about God’s faithfulness, your children want to see it practically demonstrated in your family. They want to see God bless your family financially. It would greatly help their faith (Deuteronomy 8:18).
Let your children learn rightly under your roof (Genesis 32:9-10). I have interacted with a lot of pastors’ kids who don’t want to become pastors. Their reasons have always been the issue of finances and how their parents struggled in that area. As Christians, we must differentiate between divine process and human/satanic suffering (Psalm 66:10-12).
Have a vision for abundance (Proverbs 29:18). Divine provision will always be limited by your vision. You also need to understand the balance of faith and wisdom. You need faith to tap into divine resources, and you need wisdom to steward the resources (Habakkuk 2:4). If the devil wants to attack a family, he would go after their finance. He will not succeed over yours!
