I have had to help clarify songs for my children. One day, we were out on a trip when we heard one of these secular songs playing. There was much mention of Jesus in that song that my younger daughter began to dance. The elder sister had to ask me; “Daddy, is this a Jesus song?” I had to supply them understanding.

Friend, not all Jesus songs are spiritual songs (Psalm 137:1-4). Spiritual songs are not just songs that make you feel spiritual or emotional. They are songs that align with the Holy Spirit and scriptures. Most times, when secular singers want to make their album to be accepted within the church community, they just smuggle the name of Jesus into it (Acts 19:13).

You need to be discerning to know a song or singer that has a form of godliness but denies the power thereof (2 Timothy 3:5). This is where and how worldliness has crept into the church. This is why we cannot even differentiate a praise and worship session in church from a normal performance in a secular setting (Jude 1:11-12).

It is common these days to hear Christian singers talking about they performing their song (Acts 8:19-21). It is the height of worldliness in Christianity. Listen, the battle against our faith these last days is not the battle against what is wrong. It is no longer a choice between right and wrong. It is a choice between right and almost right (Luke 4:1-14).

A spiritual song is not only a song inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is also a song that aligns with scriptures (Isaiah 8:20). It is a song that explains and/or exalts the finished work of Christ. This is why the word of Christ must dwell in you richly before you can sing spiritual songs (Colossians 3:16). Your depth in the word of God is what defines the limit of your accuracy in singing spiritual songs.

As a music minister, if you want to have a sound music ministry, have a teaching pastor you submit to (Isaiah 30:29-32). Originally, music ministry should flow out of the word ministry. It is not supposed to be a stand-alone ministry (2 Chronicles 20:21-22). As a music minister, stay planted in a local church. Receive the ministry of the word constantly, and you will operate in accuracy and safety.
