As she shared her next plans with me, I had just one question to ask her; “How long do you want to do this?” Surprised by my question, she managed to mumble some words. I explained further; “Don’t jump into anything if you are not sure you would commit to it for the long haul.” It proved to be a valuable counsel.

Friend, greatness is built from a life of permanence (Luke 13:32-33). You must beware of temporary mindset. I have come across a lot of people, especially young folks, who have been plagued with temporary mindset. They are just looking for what to do here and now. They do not realize that nobody can make a success out of anything without permanent commitment (Philippians 3:12-14).

I have seen people change jobs, businesses, plans, ideas, Church, career etc. severally within a short time. The principle for success in life remains this: get it right and get better (Acts 26:19, 22). And you have very limited time to get it right. You cannot spend all your life experimenting.

Permanence is the principle of the kingdom. There is a reason we are called trees (Isaiah 61:3). It is because trees are meant to be planted. It is those who are planted that would flourish (Psalms 92:13). If you keep transplanting your seed every now and then, you would kill it eventually. Your skills, gifts, grace, calling etc. require permanence to deliver.

Permanence is a mindset. In reality, some of us would change a few things; jobs, friends, church, business paths etc. But having a temporary mindset would not help your commitment. Just as you don’t propose to marry a lady only for a few years, don’t start anything with a temporary mindset.

God does not commit to people with temporary mindset (2 Samuel 22:26-27). Watch people’s commitment before you commit to them (John 2:24). Loyalty is about permanence. It means you would be there come rain, come shine (1 Corinthians 15:58). It means you would not allow your commitment to be affected by circumstances, but you would change circumstances by your commitment (Revelation 3:7-8).
