During a singles and married conference, I taught on love languages and urged couples to speak their spouse’s language. Then I asked the room, “What is God’s love language?” Answers flew everywhere, but the question stayed with me long after the meeting ended.
Friend, what truly moves God’s heart? Just as you learn your spouse’s language, you must learn God’s love language, too (Isaiah 66:1-2). What interests God? What draws you closer to Him? The idea that God wants nothing from you is not the full gospel (John 2:5, Acts 9:6).
We don’t work to earn God’s love, but we do respond to keep our relationship thriving (Romans 5:8, 1 John 4:19). Our actions can move Him or grieve Him. Understanding this will transform your walk with God. David did not become a man after God’s heart by accident (Acts 13:22).
Perhaps David knew and spoke God’s love language. No wonder God gave him a covenant of sure mercies (Isaiah 55:3). It is vital to receive God’s love, but you must also learn how to return it. When Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me more than fishing?” He is asking you the same (John 21:15-17).
You can do your best and still miss the mark (Luke 18:18-25). Like Martha, you can be busy serving Jesus while He doesn’t feel loved. The difference between Mary and Martha was the love language. Mary spoke Jesus’s love language. Martha did not (Luke 10:38-42).
Chief among God’s love languages is quality time (Mark 3:14). If you learn to spend time with God, you speak His love language. Nothing moves Him like your availability. Yet many believers do everything except sit with Him. God also cherishes obedience (Luke 11:28, John 14:15). Spend time to hear Him, then obey Him fully.
