I saw the surprise on their faces when I said I sold almost everything edible with my mum while growing up. It was a difficult season, but it sustained our family. Beyond survival, I learned diligence and leadership that still serve me today. That experience taught me not to despise small beginnings.
Friend, you need to think big. But don’t be afraid or ashamed to start small (Ecclesiastes 9:10). You may dream of working in a multinational, but what of your present job? How faithful are you there? Joseph diligently managed Potiphar’s house, and soon, he was set to manage all of Egypt (Genesis 41:41-44).
You may envision owning malls across major cities, but what about the small kiosk you run now? How are you managing it (Proverbs 22:29)? The skill for a mall is learned in a kiosk. The credibility you build in that little shop becomes your leverage for bigger doors (Proverbs 20:6).
You may have seen visions of preaching to thousands, but what about the five children in your Sunday School class? Are you saving your best revelations for later (1 Samuel 17:28, Psalms 78:70-72)? If you are not faithful now, that later may never come.
God does not throw people into big destinies. He prepares them through small opportunities. It is not the job that makes the man, but the man that makes the job. A great mind will enlarge a small job, while a mediocre mind will shrink a big one. Your mentality shapes your reality (Proverbs 23:7).
While you wait for big breakthroughs, steward your small breaks well. Pour your heart into them. If you are unfaithful in little, God will not entrust you with much (Luke 16:10-12). Even if you’re unclear about your future, be diligent where you are now (Amos 7:14-15). Clarity for the next step often comes from faithfulness in your current step.
